Surgery for the stomach, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and intestine.
Your health. Our priority.
Digestive surgery goes best when the person deciding whether to operate is working from the endoscopy and the scan, not just the referral letter.
- Gastroenterology and surgery in the same department, so the decision is made on the findings
- Laparoscopic surgery as the default, which for gallbladder disease usually means home the same day or the next
- Complex liver and pancreatic cases assessed rather than referred on reflex
- Intensive care on site for the operations that occasionally need it

Questions, answered.
Common questions about surgical gastroenterology care at Humayun Hospital.
Do gallstones always need surgery?
No. Stones found by chance and causing no symptoms are often left alone. Surgery is advised once they cause pain, inflammation or block the bile duct, because those tend to recur.
How long is recovery after keyhole gallbladder surgery?
Most people go home within a day and return to desk work in about a week. Heavy lifting waits three to four weeks.
Will my surgery definitely be keyhole?
It is the intention. Occasionally a laparoscopic operation has to be converted to an open one for safety, usually because of inflammation or scarring. That is a judgement made during surgery.
Can I eat normally after gallbladder removal?
Most people can, after a few weeks of settling. Some find very fatty meals harder for a while. A permanent special diet is rarely necessary.
