Frequently Asked Questions

What is JCI accreditation?

Joint Commission International is the global arm of the body that accredits hospitals in the United States. It assesses hospitals against standards written around patient safety and quality of care, by observing how real patients are assessed, consented, medicated, operated on and discharged.

What does JCI accreditation mean for patients?

It means the processes around your care are consistent and independently checked - correct identification before every medication and procedure, surgical safety checks, audited infection control, and a clear explanation before you consent to treatment.

How does JCI accreditation support patient safety?

The standards cover the areas where avoidable harm happens: patient identification, communication at handover, high-alert medication, safe surgery, infection prevention and fall risk. Each one has a documented protocol that staff are trained on and audited against.

How often is JCI accreditation reviewed?

Accreditation runs on a three-year cycle, and the full survey is repeated each cycle. Hospitals are expected to maintain the standards continuously rather than prepare for the visit, and parts of the survey are unannounced.
