Consult a Neonatology Specialist

Your health. Our priority.

For a newborn in difficulty, the distance between the delivery room and the incubator is the thing that matters most.

  • The neonatal unit on the same floor as the labour rooms, so no newborn is transported between buildings
  • A neonatologist present at deliveries known to be high risk, rather than called afterwards
  • Parents in the unit, encouraged to touch, hold and feed as soon as it is safe
  • Feeding and follow-up arranged before discharge, not left to the first outpatient visit

Questions, answered.

Common questions about neonatology care at Humayun Hospital.

Why has my baby been admitted to the NICU?

Common reasons are prematurity, breathing difficulty, jaundice needing treatment, infection or low blood sugar. The neonatologist will explain your baby's specific reason and expected stay.

Can I visit and hold my baby?

Yes. Parents are welcome in the unit and we encourage skin-to-skin contact as soon as the baby is stable. It helps feeding, temperature and bonding.

Can I still breastfeed a baby in the NICU?

Usually yes. If the baby cannot feed directly at first, we support expressing so your milk is given by tube. The nursing team will show you how.

How long will my baby stay?

It varies. A jaundiced term baby may stay two or three days. A premature baby often stays until close to their original due date. You will be given a realistic expectation early.
