Gastroenterology
Diagnosis and treatment of digestive, liver and gastrointestinal conditions.
Diagnosis and treatment of digestive, liver and gastrointestinal conditions.
Your health. Our priority.
Digestive symptoms are worth investigating properly once, rather than being managed on guesswork for years.
- Endoscopy and colonoscopy done here as day-care, so a diagnosis takes days rather than months
- Findings explained the same day, with the images, rather than posted as a report
- Liver disease followed over time instead of being seen once and discharged
- Surgical gastroenterology in the same hospital when an operation turns out to be needed

Questions, answered.
Common questions about gastroenterology care at Humayun Hospital.
Is an endoscopy painful?
It is uncomfortable rather than painful, and it is done with throat spray or light sedation. Most people find it easier than they expected, and it takes about ten minutes.
Do I need a colonoscopy for constipation?
Usually not. Constipation alone rarely needs one. It becomes important if there is bleeding, weight loss, anaemia, a persistent change in bowel habit, or you are over 45.
Is fatty liver serious?
It can become so. In its early stage it is reversible with weight, diet and control of diabetes. Left for years it can progress to scarring, which is not.
Will I be able to go home the same day?
Yes, for routine endoscopy and colonoscopy. You will need somebody to accompany you if sedation was used, and you should not drive that day.
