Treatment for piles, fissures, fistula and disorders of the colon and rectum.

Treatment for piles, fissures, fistula and disorders of the colon and rectum.

Consult a Colorectal Surgery Specialist

Your health. Our priority.

Two things matter in this department: treating the common problems well, and never assuming that bleeding is only piles.

  • Bleeding investigated rather than attributed to piles without looking, because the two coexist
  • Day-care procedures for haemorrhoids and fissures, with most patients home the same day
  • Colonoscopy in the same department, so investigation and treatment are not separate journeys
  • Consultations given the privacy and time the subject needs

Questions, answered.

Common questions about colorectal surgery care at Humayun Hospital.

I have bleeding. Is it definitely piles?

Probably, but it should not be assumed. Piles are common and so is bowel disease, and they can occur together. Bleeding deserves an examination, and a colonoscopy if you are over 45 or the pattern has changed.

Is piles surgery very painful?

Modern techniques including stapled and laser treatment are considerably less painful than traditional surgery. There is discomfort for a few days, managed with medication and stool softeners.

Can piles be treated without an operation?

Early piles often respond to diet, fibre, water and medication, and to banding done in the clinic. Surgery is for advanced or persistent disease.

Will I be able to go home the same day?

For most day-care procedures, yes. Larger operations and fistula surgery sometimes need an overnight stay.
