Anaesthesia and perioperative care across every surgical department.
Anaesthesia and perioperative care across every surgical department.
Your health. Our priority.
Anaesthesia is safest when the assessment happens days before the operation rather than minutes before it.
- A pre-operative assessment that finds the heart, lung or airway problem before the day of surgery
- The technique chosen for the patient, so an older patient may have a spinal where a general anaesthetic carries more risk
- Pain relief planned in advance, because pain controlled early is easier to control than pain chased afterwards
- The same anaesthetist through the operation and into recovery

Questions, answered.
Common questions about anaesthesiology care at Humayun Hospital.
Will I feel anything during surgery?
No. Under general anaesthesia you are unconscious. Under spinal or regional anaesthesia you are awake but the area is completely numb, and sedation can be given if you would rather not be alert.
Is anaesthesia dangerous?
Modern anaesthesia is very safe, and the assessment beforehand is what keeps it that way. Existing heart, lung or airway problems increase risk, which is exactly why they are identified in advance.
Why must I not eat before surgery?
Because a full stomach can empty into the lungs while you are unconscious, which is serious. The fasting rules are usually six hours for food and two for clear fluids.
Does an epidural in labour slow things down?
It does not increase the chance of a caesarean. It may lengthen the pushing stage slightly. Your obstetrician and anaesthetist will discuss it with you during pregnancy.
